The Root Canal Recovery Guide: What You Need to Know

February 7, 2025

Patient relaxing after a root canal

If you’ve just had a root canal or if you’re scheduled for one soon, you might be wondering what happens after your dentist finishes up. Will you be in pain? Can you eat whatever you want? And how long until you feel back to normal? If you’re looking for the answers to these questions and more, continue reading. You’ll find a simple guide to help you know what to expect after your root canal.

Mild Discomfort Is Normal

Right after the procedure, your mouth will likely feel numb for a few hours. However, once the numbness fades, it’s normal to feel some soreness or tenderness near the treated tooth.

This discomfort usually peaks within 24 to 48 hours and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If the pain seems severe or lasts more than a few days, give your dentist a call just to be safe.

Be Gentle with Your Tooth

If your dentist hasn’t placed a crown yet, the treated tooth may still be a bit fragile. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods until your dentist gives you the green light. Chewing on the other side of your mouth can help protect the area while it heals. Once your permanent crown is placed, you can go back to eating whatever you like.

Stay Watchful for Strange Symptoms

It’s rare, but some patients experience minor swelling, a small bump on the gums, or prolonged pain after a root canal. These could be signs of a lingering infection or complications that need attention.

If you notice anything that seems out of the ordinary, especially if it gets worse over time, don’t hesitate to call your dentist for guidance. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your smile!

Keep Up with Your Oral Care

While the area around your treated tooth may feel tender, it’s important to continue your oral hygiene routine. Brushing and flossing keep harmful bacteria and food particles from building up near your tooth, which is important for keeping it from becoming infected while it heals (and after).

Many people are surprised at how quickly they bounce back after a root canal. In just a few days, the discomfort fades, and you’ll likely forget anything ever happened. With proper oral hygiene and follow-up care, your newly treated tooth can last a lifetime!
